Canyon è una parola inglese che designa in maniera specifica una valle tipica dell'America settentrionale, originata dall'erosione fluviale, molto stretta e con pareti a strapiombo. In italiano, una profonda incisione a pareti ripide, prodottasi in una montagna per l'azione erosiva delle acque si chiama invece gola. Una gola particolarmente profonda e incassata, sul cui fondo scorre un corso d'acqua è una forra.
